Clever Steering Controls Design by Jeep

|

< 1 min read

Inspired by Don Norman‘s book – Design of Everyday Things – I like to share examples of great designs whenever I come across something interesting.

Here’s another one…

I recently got to drive a Jeep after a while; I was trying to change the song while driving, and got super frustrated when the buttons mounted on the steering wheel weren’t working.

Then suddenly my hands went towards back of the steering wheel.. and voila! forward, backward, and volume control buttons were actually located at the back of the steering wheel! I couldn’t help but chuckle in admiration of designers at Jeep.

Control behind the steering wheel

With increasing number of features mounted on steering wheels for every new feature, this is an ingenious use of space while ensuring proximity to the driver.

Probably inspired by design of gaming remote controllers, this is a terrific example of human centered design. I wonder why other automobile companies don’t follow the suite?

What’s an ingenious design example you recently came across?
