Book review – Predictably Irrational by Dan Ariely
Released in 2008, slightly older, but was totally worth it!
Few takeaways that you can apply in day-to-day life:
1. When you go to bars to meet girls, take a slightly less attractive friend with you. The likelihood of you being more attractive would increase! This is based on principal of relativity. That is why businesses give you three tipping options 18%, 20%, and 22% respectively. Essentially, they want you to pick 20%, and most people do. Since 20% is the middle option, it becomes more attractive relative to others!
2. Don’t mix social and monetary norms. People are more likely to help within social bounds. If you try to quantify that work’s monetary worth, first, most likely you won’t be able to pay the full price; second, people will be less happy if they are not compensated appropriately, if you did decide to pay them. People are much happier if you just ask for help under social norms without actually paying anything.
3. The more you are away from actual cash the more people are likely to be un-ethical. For example, most people are comfortable taking few extra pen for personal use from office whereas no one would directly steal money.
