Book Review: Am I Being Too Subtle?

Am I being too subtle?

Fantastic read by multi-billionaire real estate mogul Sam Zell!

Zell’s parents left Poland days before Holocaust, and lived as refugees in three countries for years before reaching to the US. The book itself is dedicated to the immigrants.

An interesting tale of how he started managing small dorms during his college days and slowly created an empire of most iconic buildings and offices in the US, which he later sold to Blackstone at a hefty profit.

Along the way, people gave him several nicknames namely Grave Dancer, Cassandra – greek goddess of true prophecies never to be believed – and opportunistic, but he kept on going with a sense of urgency instilled by his immigrant roots.

He was asked, “what’s the secret of your success?”

Sam replied, “Shem Tov and Tzedakah.”

Both Jewish traditions.

Shem Tov – Meaning master of Good Name.

Tzedakah – A tradition of giving.

Filled with invaluable investing lessons in every chapter and every deal Sam touches upon.

Thanks Mohnish Pabrai for recommending it!
